This & That (playing catch-up):

This week we were recovering from a week of Revival meetings with Jason Reed.  Although we appreciate the effort and the messages along with the other activities of the weekend, after awhile the body doesn't want to cooperate and hurry anywhere else.  On top of that, things tend to slowly fall apart at home when we are gone that much so it takes some time to pull it all back together.

Last weekend we were treated to a ladies' tea party, a baptism, love feast, minister's appreciation dinner (where our family performed a puppet show), and lots of fellowship.  My parents were also here for the weekend.

We canned 60lbs of green beans (8 canners) one day.  Due to the lovely weather, I was able to set up the canners outside on the big camping stove.  It kept the heat and mess outside and left the kitchen for normal daily activities.  It certainly helps when the children are old enough to efficiently snap the beans themselves.  They could have a pile snapped while I took care of the canners outside and then I would come in and fill seven more jars.

Congratulations to my sister who just bought a house.  She has lived in an apartment for a few years and was tired of that so decided to take advantage of the depressed housing market where she could own for the same price as renting.

I like the "fall back" time change but it sure makes the evenings so long!  Tiana has it in her mind that she is to put on her pajamas when it gets dark and is not adjusting well to the idea of life going on when it is dark.  I have found that it is quite a bit easier to get to bed at a decent time as opposed to the late nights during the summer.

100_4450 Here's the kitty that went camping and is in Bethany's pictures from the last post.  We are having the worst time with a name for her.  We (I thought) settled on "Butter" but it doesn't seem to be sticking very well.  She is generally called "baby kitty" and they boys are always coming up with names for her that Bethany doesn't like such as "Cat Carson" or "Bullet"

It is great to have creative and crafty friends.  Tiana was invited to join Jude and Gideon for a craft time and had fun painting leaves with paint-covered marbles and then painting pictures with brushes.  Thanks April!

I asked Bethany what kind of cake she would like for her birthday, "A kitty, of course," was her reply.  I am running out of ideas for unique kitty cakes so there's going to have to be repeats in the following years.

I do need to revise the statement about her being a "young lady" from the last post.  Nathan gave her a Nerf pistol for her birthday so she spent the evening chasing the boys around or doing target practice.  I guess at this age, lady-likeness comes and goes.

 At the Pumpkin Patch

100_4423

On Friday, Rudy left work a few hours early and we headed to the nearest pumpkin patch to enjoy the beautiful weather.  We drove through the countryside enjoying the orchards, cotton fields, and other crops common in our area.  The pumpkin patch was a nice break from our usual activities.

100_4432 100_4417 Bethany and Tiana decided to eat raw corn. Yuck!

We all went in the corn maze and were surprised to find that the entrance was also the exit.  We kept looking for another exit but ended up back at the beginning.  The boys and girls ran around in there multiple other times while Rudy and I sat in the shade and waited for them.  It is amazing how warm the days still are yet the nights are nice and cool.  The leaves are just beginning to turn colors in some places so it really doesn't seem too fallish yet.

From the mind of a three-year old:
*We will get in the vehicle and Tiana will request a certain song on the radio.  She does not understand that I have no control over what the station decided to play.
*She was watching a "Blue's Clues" video the other day and there was a lady talking to Steve (the host) in sign language.  The lady's lips were moving and she was signing with her hands while Steve replied in both spoken words and sign language.  Tiana watched this for awhile and looked over at me and said, "Mommy will you turn the lady up?"  She thought something was wrong with the sound.
*One night Rudy had to go to a dinner ceremony for work so he got dressed up and left the rest of us at home for the evening.  Tiana had the worst evening ever and cried over every little thing.  It finally dawned on me that she was upset that Rudy had left us and it confused and upset her.  I let her stay up until he got home so he could put her to bed.  What a change from the child who cried because Rudy came home; now she cries because he goes away.
*The other night she was praying and amongst other things, declared her thanksgiving for the gum Edie gives her.

Fall Family Fun

It is quickly becoming a tradition for my family to have a weekend vacation in the fall.
We go somewhere neutral where no specific family has their home invaded
or is in charge of every little detail.
We all pitch in and have a great weekend.

This time we rented two 1930's cottages on a historic 40 acre ranch property near Lake Isabella.
We spent the weekend playing on the landscaped five acres around the houses with a
great view of the mountains and a piece of the lake in the distance.
There were many games of volleyball and horseshoes.
We sat on the deck and visited.  We ate at picnic tables under the arbor.
Every night there was a camp fire.

Amber fixed T-shirts for the children to decorate and Tamara planned hilarious games
to go with the scavenger hunt that led to a pinata.
Everyone took their turn fixing a meal and we sure ate well:
pizza, sub sandwiches, chicken enchilada casserole, lasagna, and various breakfast dishes.
There was a birthday party for our three older children.
We were also celebrating our parent's 40th anniversary.

On Sunday, after devotions, we were sitting around and talking about how fortunate
we are to have a family that gets along and likes to spend time together.
It is truly a blessing to have a large and loving family.

This picture was taken on Sunday morning when it had turned colder with a strong wind blowing off the lake.  Burr! But so glad fall is here.

The clues led to the pinata.  More fun to follow.

Since returning home from camping, I have not felt very good so I have neglected to post a very important  message....

Happy 13th Birthday Boys

The boys had their 13th birthday while we were camping.
They were not too excited at the prospect of spending their birthday cleaning
up camp and then unloading at home.  They managed to survive and to top if off they
took Monday off from school to have fun and play with their new toys.

The boys generally request something other than birthday cake
and this year it was lemon lush.  Since I was not feeling up to par,
I completely forgot to take a picture of them blowing out their candles
in their lemon lush.  Fortunately Bethany was running the video camera
so we do have a record.  Rudy did suggest I make another lemon lush
so we could repeat the event.  Good Try!
